Hiplife grand-papa Reggie Rockstone says payola hindered the growth of the hiplife genre in Ghana.
Reggie narrates that before one’s songs gets played on radio and TV, promoters will demand for payola before agreeing to what you want them to do.
Reggie insisted this attitude has affected the musical growth of the hiplife genre and musicians.
When asked about the claims M.anifest made about the genre was true or not Reggie answered;
“I will not say that hiplife is dead, and I said that in the documentary that I can’t sit here in Ghana and claim something I gave birth and named is dead, even though I understand his sentiments.”
“The brand Hiplife has become unattractive to associate with for many reasons. One of which is radio stations demand payola before playing our music.”
“That was what they were doing to us when we had just started building the foundation of the genre where we had little to pay for the music to be played.”
