Only 5% of Ghanaian artists make money from music – Rex Omar

Renowned highlife musician Rex Omar says only few Ghana artists make enough money from music.

According to Rex Omar about only 5% of Ghana’s artists earn money from their music career per a survey that was conducted.

Speaking on Y107.9 FM he said;

“Most of them are doing it with passion hoping that something will happen. Until today, most of the people pursuing music are not approaching it as business and as soon as you start to approach it as business, then you start to ask questions like if it is viable, especially doing music full time in Ghana.”

 “Most musicians are unaware of the vital resources they need to invest in their talent. Most musicians lack this information.”

“Even If your break point is 5 years, you need to know how much money to invest in your career to break it, so if your answers and numbers are not matching then it is not viable.

“Unfortunately, this very society will start to criticize you that you didn’t live a profitable and fulfilling life. They will say you spent all you had on women.”

“When the whole situation is that Ghana is a small market and we have few independent record labels that have enough capital and knowledge to make artists reach their target.

“If you’re not careful, some people who are already in the music industry thinking and hoping they will make it will also pounce on you because of the passion they have invested.”

“if you put emotions aside and view it with a business approach, you find out that only few musicians are making money off their music career.”
